About Fires in the home

This is useful information about how a fire evolves, what it needs to spread and the damage it causes. This is followed by some facts and figures of the devastation caused by fires.

Fire is the visible effect of the process of combustion – a special type of chemical reaction. It occurs between oxygen in the air and some sort of fuel. The products from the chemical reaction are completely different from the starting material.

The fuel must be heated to its ignition temperature for combustion to occur. The reaction will keep going as long as there is enough heat, fuel and oxygen. This is known as the fire triangle.

  Fire Ignition

Fire  needs  3  elements  to live  :

HEAT :  When  a  fire  starts,  it  will  maintain  its own  heat  supply.

OXYGEN  :  Usually  air  which  contains  appr.  20%   oxygen.

FUEL  :  A  combustion  substance  either  solid,  liquid  or  gas.

Water  will  remove  all  these  elements  by  DILUTING  the FUEL, COOLING  the  heat  or  smothering  the  oxygen.

Fire  Sprinkler  Systems  are  designed  to  contain  and  suppress the fire  by attacking one side of the Fire Triangle.  This allows  safe  egress  from  a  building  and  allows  time  for  the Fire Brigade to extinguish  the  fire.
